Most of us assume that snoring isn’t a threat to
our health and well-being and so we ignore it.But its creat more problem to bed partner than patient. This is inadvisable, especially
if a snorer wakes up feeling fatigued or gets sleepy during the day.
To deal with the problem, snorers
are advised to lose excess weight, avoid smoking, sleep on the side, elevate
head during sleep, treat congestion, avoid caffeine and heavy meals two hours
before sleep.
Simple
throat exercises could also stop snoring. These include:
- Repeatedly saying the vowels a,e,i,o,u out loud for three minutes a day, a few times a day.
- Placing the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth and sliding the tongue backwards for three minutes a day.
- Closing and pursing your mouth for 30 seconds.
- Opening your mouth and moving your jaw first to the right and then to the left for 30 seconds.
Singing can
also increase muscle control in the throat and soft palate, reducing snoring
due to relaxed muscles. You might be interested in how snoring or obstructive
sleep apnoea disrupts sleep.
Patient problem: it cuts off oxygen flow into
the body and reduces the elimination of carbondioxide from the body. When this
happens, the brain wakes the rest of the body up so as to restart breathing. If
this happens several times a night, one may wake up feeling un-refreshed (and
will be tired the rest of the day).
Also,
because the body is deprived of oxygen during the episodes of obstructive sleep
apnoe, the heart is forced to pump blood harder, putting adults at the risk of
heart attack. It is important to address snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
because not only does it put one’s heart health at risk, but the irritability,
unproductivity and poor grades likely to be caused by the above conditions may
have far reaching effects on one’s relationships, self-esteem and work life.
